Lawler running for mayor

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Jerry "The King" Lawler, who once slapped Andy Kaufman on television, is running for mayor.
Lawler, now a World Wrestling Federation commentator, said Tuesday "literally thousands of people in Memphis" have urged him to run in the Oct. 7 race.
"I think they're looking at me as someone who's certainly not a politician but a lifelong resident of Memphis and as someone who has a love of this city," he said.
Lawler, 49, gained national notoriety in 1982 by slapping comedian Kaufman on "Late Night With David Letterman."
His opponents include Mayor Willie Herenton, the city's first elected black mayor, and City Councilman Joe Ford, brother of former Rep. Harold Ford Sr., D-Tenn.
