Renegades unveil 2005 coaching staff

OTTAWA - The Ottawa Renegades football club unveiled its 2005 coaching staff Wednesday, returning some familiar faces, shuffling some positions, and welcoming two new veteran football minds for the upcoming season.

Joe Paopao, Renegades Head Coach and General Manager, announced the group of coaches that will be with the Renegades this year. The staff includes four coaches who were on board with the club last season and a pair of additions - Greg Marshall, who will be Ottawa's defensive coordinator; and Richard Harris, the Renegades' new defensive line coach.

A strong base of Paopao's staff remains in tact.

Kani Kauahi, who has been with the Renegades since day one with Paopao, returns as the team's offensive coordinator and assistant head coach. Tommy Condell is back as the quarterbacks and receivers coach, while Jaime Hill will also return for the second straight year, remaining the defensive backs coach and will add co-defensive coordinator duties to his responsibilities as well. Jim Clark, a native of St. Thomas, Ontario, who spent five years with the University of Ottawa Gee Gees in the 1970s and 1980s (two as head coach) and time as a high school assistant coach with Ashbury Collegiate, takes over as the Renegades' special teams coordinator.

"We are happy with our coaching staff and our guys will have expanded roles and be involved in a variety of areas. Many of our guys have been coordinators and involved in personnel before at different levels of football and that's important," said Paopao. "Our staff strengthens us and gives us depth."

Ottawa's two new coaches are veterans to professional football.

Marshall spent the last five seasons with the Edmonton Eskimos, coordinating a defence that lifted the club to a Grey Cup title. He was with Saskatchewan, in the same capacity for six years previous to that, and played with the Ottawa Rough Riders from 1980-1988. Harris was with the B.C. Lions the last five years as defensive line coach. Prior to his time with the Lions, Harris was the head coach of the Portland Prowlers of the Indoor Professional Football League. An eight-year NFL defensive lineman, Harris was selected in the first round (fifth overall) in the 1971 draft by the Philadelphia Eagles.
