Tuesday, October 5, 1999 Sens snubbed by bush-league Expos
Through the graciousness of Montreal Expos PR director P.J. Loyello, several player and management types from the Senators were invited to the Expos' season finale against the Phillies at Veterans Stadium. That was a big-league gesture by Loyello. He even arranged for the Senators entourage to get down to the Expos clubhouse after the game, but when it came to the Expos players, things turned decidedly minor league. Only three players -- Anthony Telford, Ryan McGwire and Steve Klein _ took the time out to extend the courtesy of saying hello to the visiting Senators. That's not to say the red carpet should have been rolled out for the Sens. Let's face it. Most of the Expos players wouldn't know Wayne Gretzky if he was sitting in their locker. But a Senators player made a good point yesterday when he said any other pro athletes visiting the Senators' dressing room would be given a warm welcome, just out of professional courtesy. Okay, maybe the Expos were anxious to hit the road after ending their season. Maybe they were upset with the way they lost 6-5 to the Phillies, blowing a 5-0 lead. There was no excuse for the complete indifference they seemed to have for everybody around them, even their teammates. "Don't call me, I'll call you," shouted closer Ugueth Urbina to his teammates as he exited the clubhouse for the final time in the 1999 season. "I was shocked," said one Senators player. "I don't know what to say. I've never seen anything like that before."
