Saturday, October 2, 1999 An inspiring choiceSens hope 'C' will reignite AlfredssonHe responded with a breakthrough season. Now with Yashin holding out for a new contract, the Senators have turned to Daniel Alfredsson to become their captain. After two injury-riddled years, might the 'C' spur Alfredsson on and, perhaps, also stand for `comeback?' "I lead by example whether it's a practice or game to game. I give 100%," said Alfredsson. "But wearing the 'C' is nothing you can look away from. There's a lot of responsibility." Senators coach Jacques Martin also named Shawn McEachern and Wade Redden as assistant captains and made it clear, if and when Yashin returns, he would resume being captain. "That's not an issue," said Martin, "because Alexei is our captain." When and if Yashin returns, Alfredsson will go back to wearing an 'A' while McEachern and Redden will share the other assistant captaincy. Martin said it wasn't a hard decision when it came to naming a replacement for Yashin. "It was easy from the standpoint we have good people here and Alfie has strong leadership qualities. He's a good example on the ice with his effort game in and game out. He's earned these stripes." Alfredsson said his appointment was also significant for European hockey. "This is good for Swedish and European hockey. (Mats) Sundin is captain in Toronto and (Saku) Koivu in Montreal," said Alfredsson. Koivu was elected captain of the Habs by his teammates Thursday.
