    How could they lose?

Sens have only themselves to blame for loss to Flames

By DON BRENNAN -- Ottawa Sun
You weren't pleased with the Senators performance last night?
     Neither were they.
"We were up 2-0. We shouldn't lose a game like that," said Shawn McEachern. "I thought we were playing well ... and then we just stopped.
"We didn't do the things that make us win games."
Ron Tugnutt: "If you don't play hard, if you don't play your best game in this league, chances are you're going to lose."
Parity in the league is one thing, but the Senators should not be losing to the Calgary Flames on home ice.
Jacques Martin's practice should be an interesting one this morning.
STOPS AND STARTS: In the first of back-to-back Bure brother visits, Valeri gave further prove he has become one of the top offensive players in the game ... If Magnus (P.I.) Arvedson has never played croquet before, he should consider taking up the lawn game. His first-period goal went right through the wickets of Steve Smith and Grant Fuhr ... When they had Todd Simpson, Chris Dingman and Ed Ward last year, the Flames were a big, tough, bad hockey team. No longer are they big and tough ... Moments before his goal, Andre Roy displayed his growing confidence by stickhandling up the middle out of the defensive zone. Martin would probably like him to display it in other ways, however ... Remember when? "We're close to automatic when we have the lead going into the third," said Shaun Van Allen. "Usually, we're just so strong defensively, if we have a one-goal lead with 20 minutes left, we're going to win." Not last night, as blowing leads was a problem throughout.
BETWEEN PERIODS: Best Senator last night was Kevin Dineen, who led the team in shots on goal (four) and hustle ... What were you doing between 8-8:30 p.m. last night? The Senators were having a snooze ... On that topic, the Flames had in their lineup the ultimate "sleeper" last night. Centre Pavel Torgaev holds the distinction of being the lowest draft pick ever -- 11th round, 279th overall in 1994 -- to ever make it into the NHL. I'm not going to tell you who drew that one to my attention, but if you know anything about NHL trivia experts, you could guess ... Most unpopular call of the night? Picking the girl ahead of the guy in a third period dance contest held in the crowd and shown on the big screen ... Former Metcalfe Jets star Marc Savard was here for the first time as a Calgary Flame. He had three shots on goal and was a +1.
WHO NEEDS TICKETS?: Kathie Balloch won Cheapseats to last night's game because she knew the correct answer to yesterday's question -- and was the first to call in after 10 a.m. Calgary defenceman Phil Housley was Joe Juneau's Washington Capital teammate when they eliminated the Senators from the 1997 playoffs ... I've got another pair for tomorrow's game against the Florida Panthers. They'll go to the first person to call, after 10 a.m., leaving the answer to this one on my voice mail (739-5120): What off-ice club was Lance Pitlick the leader of while he was with the Senators? ... If you know what junior team Marian Hossa's younger brother Marcel plays for, and you'd like a pair of tickets to tonight's 67's game, give me a call with the correct answer at the same number, also after 10 a.m.
