Saturday, October 23, 1999 Swiss account pays dividendsRogue hockey star, supermodel find time for romance in Alpine hideawayAlexei Yashin and Carol Alt are back together here in the Swiss Alps and the high-profile pair don't seem to care who knows it. In fact, the supermodel-turned-actress and the Ottawa Senators rogue Russian superstar looked quite comfortable snuggled in their seats at the local arena last night as they watched the Kloten Flyers do battle with Bern. And while hockey is always close to Yashin's heart, Alt conceded the sport had taken a back seat in her life until she started dating the infamous Sens holdout. "I had really kind of lost touch with it," said Alt, who is divorced from retired New York Ranger Ron Greschner. "But I love watching hockey. I really enjoy the game." Alt arrived Thursday to spend time with Yashin, who is practising with the Swiss Elite League's Flyers. MUTE ON RELATIONSHIP Except for comments made on Howard Stern's radio show, Alt has remained virtually mute on the topic of her relationship with 25-year-old Yashin. On the other side of the Atlantic, however, words about their romance flow a little easier. Alt, 37, went to the NHL awards banquet in Toronto this summer to present the Calder Trophy. She confirmed yesterday her meeting with Yashin -- who was a finalist for the Hart Trophy as the league's MVP - was purely accidental. "I guess they heard I was in town filming the show so somebody just asked me to come to present the Calder Trophy," said Alt, who is in Kloten on a five-day break from shooting her TV series Amazon. "We met there. That's where it started." Alt has been in Toronto since April filming the series. She has her landed immigrant status and enjoys living in Canada's largest city. "I hope someday to become a Canadian citizen because the contract I have with the series right now has me in Canada for the next three years. I've always loved the country," said Alt, a New York native. "I spent a year in Africa before I got the contract for this series and when I got back to Manhattan it just seemed too big for me all of the sudden. Canadians have been very nice to me." IN TOUCH BY PHONE The much-in-demand Alt and Yashin haven't had much time together and stay in touch with by phone. Still, Alt has found the time to tour Parliament Hill with Yashin, visited him in Zurich in August while he trained with Pittsburgh Penguins defenceman Darius Kasparaitis and was Yashin's date at the US Open tennis championships in New York in August. "We have fun together," Yashin said yesterday. "She's a nice person and she's very friendly with people." Alt is returning to Toronto Tuesday and then jetting off to Australia for her 38th birthday Dec. 1. She and Yashin aren't sure when they're going to see each other again. Asked if she was embarrassed by being asked about her sex life with Yashin on the Stern show, Alt conceded yesterday she was at the very least surprised. It didn't bother her too much, though -- Alt brought a tape of the show with her to Sweden to share with Yashin, who had a good laugh. "That's where it really become public because up to that point Alexei and I had kind of been trying to keep it quiet," said Alt. "I wasn't embarrassed. I don't really like when he asks about all the sex stuff but I've been on the Howard Stern show before and you know what you're going to get with that guy." One subject Alt wouldn't discuss was Yashin's contract dispute with Senators. "I just want for Alexei whatever makes him happy," she said.
