Adviser saves life, York shaken up

By BRUCE GARRIOCH -- Ottawa Sun
PHOENIX -- Jason York was looking for financial advice, he wasn't bargaining for an experience which will stick with him for the rest of his life.
The Senators defenceman, with teammates Shawn McEachern and Wade Redden, admitted to being shaken up yesterday after York's financial adviser saved a man's life in a Phoenix restaurant Wednesday night.
Anthony Reguero, who lives in the Phoenix area and assists York with his money affairs, stopped a man from choking on a piece of steak with York, McEachern and Redden among the 100 people in the restaurant.
"It was one of the scariest experiences I've ever had in my life," said York prior to last night's game against the Phoenix Coyotes.
"The guy started choking on a piece of steak and he must have weighed over 300 pounds, so they couldn't perform the Heimlich manoeuvre on him because nobody could get their arms around him.
"He was laying slumped on the floor for about two minutes when Anthony -- who has military experience -- jumped in and put him on his side and did something to his sternum to dislodge the piece of meat.
"I was sitting there thinking I'm going to see this guy die and it was a helpless experience because nobody was able to get that peice of meat loose. Even the paramedics told Anthony the guy was about a minute away from dying. We were all pretty shaken up."
Originally, York wasn't scheduled to go to the downtown restaurant -- named Durand's -- but cancelled his reservations at another establishment because it came highly recommended.
York, a father of daughter Alexandra, plans to take rescue courses after the experience.
"I just thought I didn't know what to do and imagine what would happen if that happened to my child," said York.
"After it happened we had Anthony showing us exactly what it did. You want to know what to do in that situation."
