Tuesday, November 9, 1999 Sore foot won't keep Phillips out
Chris Phillips was on the limp yesterday, but the Senators defenceman doesn't expect to stay that way for long. Phillips, who had right ankle surgery last year that forced him to miss most of the second half of the regular season, took a shot in the same spot in Saturday's 2-1 victory over the Montreal Canadiens. Still, Phillips expects to be back on the ice tomorrow night against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden. "It's just a little sore but everything should be fine," said Phillips. "It's something that has been there for a while but the shot just aggravated it a little. I don't think it's anything that I have to worry about. "They think it might just be the ligaments acting up a little bit. That's all." LOOKING FOR HELP: Senators GM Marshall Johnston is continuing his search for somebody who can help out on the blue line in the wake of injuries to Sami Salo (broken wrist) and Igor Kravchuk (knee). Sources say the Senators have held talks with the Chicago Blackhawks about Bryan Muir, Jamie Allison and Dave Manson, but Johnston has to decide if he wants to make a deal or sign a free agent. The Hawks have made it clear they want nothing to do with struggling C Vaclav Prospal because they don't like his character, but Chicago GM Bob Murray has expressed an interest in winger Bruce Gardiner. The Senators have also had talks with free-agent Ds Marty McSorley (Edmonton) and Gerald Diduck (Phoenix). McSorley is anxious to play here, while Diduck isn't thrilled with the idea of suiting up for a Canadian team. "I know Marshall is working on something in that area and there could be some help coming there, but that's not my area of concern," said Ottawa coach Jacques Martin. TOUGH JOB: You know it's a tough season when the coach is on the injured list. "I'm day to day," said Martin, who missed yesterday's workout because of a disc problem in his back. His absence meant assistant coaches Perry Pearn and Andre Savard ran practice.
