Monday, November 8, 1999 No movement on Yashin frontOTTAWA (CP) -- It was business as usual for the Ottawa Senators on Monday with no Alexei Yashin in sight. There was confusion, however, whether Monday represented a deadline in the Yashin contract deadlock. The Ottawa Sun had reported that the Senators planned to suspend their former captain for the season if he hadn't reported for duty by Monday. But the Senators refused to talk deadline. "We're not comfirming or denying that there is a deadline date," said Senators spokesman Phil Legault. Yashin did not report to training camp because he wanted his contract re-negotiated. The Russian forward, who left Canada for Switzerland, has been suspended indefinitely by the Senators and has not been paid any of his $3.6-million US salary since the day training camp opened Sept. 6. NHL spokesman Frank Brown said the Senators are not required to notify the league if they suspend Yashin for the year. "Contractual issues are between the NHL clubs and their players," said Brown. The NHL Players' Association had no comment Monday. Another layer was added to the messy affair when Yashin's 18-year-old brother Dmitri Yashin, who plays for the Kanata Valley Lasers of the Ontario Junior A Hockey League, was detained by Ottawa-Carleton police on Friday after an amount of what was believed to be cocaine was found in a car in which Dmitri was a passenger. No charges were laid and the substance will be analysed in a labratory, said police. The Ottawa Sun quoted an anonymous police source who said: "It wasn't his. It may have been a frame-up." Dmitri denied the substance was his and told the Sun said the incident was a "misunderstanding."
