Wednesday, November 3, 1999 Yashin rumour blown away
WASHINGTON -- Trade winds blowing yesterday that had holdout centre Alexei Yashin going to the Windy City are nothing more than a lot of hot air. Sources say talk Yashin could be headed to the Chicago Blackhawks as part of a three-way deal with the Carolina Hurricanes are a "fabrication" and there are no ongoing talks involving the Senators captain. Yashin's New Jersey-based agent Mark Gandler gave credibility to the rumours yesterday by telling the Chicago Sun-Times the three-way trade was believable and that set off a feeding frenzy in the media. Talk on the Internet had the deal close to being done. "I said it was believable, but I didn't say I believed it," said Gandler last night. "I haven't heard anything and I don't know anything about it. But Chicago is a team that makes sense because they need a player like Alexei." As part of the trade rumour, the Senators would have received holdout centre Keith Primeau from the Hurricanes. "Why would the Senators want Primeau when they have enough problems of their own with Yashin? Primeau's a bigger problem than Yashin. He doesn't have a contract and he turned down $20 million US from Carolina," said an NHL executive. The Senators have given Yashin a deadline of Nov. 8 to return or he'll be suspended for the year. Gandler said his client has no plans to leave his holdout hideaway in the Swiss Alps. It's possible Yashin could be dealt following the deadline, but sources say the Senators are willing to wait to see where the club is in December before deciding whether they need to make a deal. That means nothing has changed. In fact, Gandler and Yashin's parents, Tatiana and Valery, are headed to Kloten, Switzerland, tomorrow to help Alexei celebrate his 26th birthday. ROUGH RIDE: The Senators' charter had a rough landing at the Baltimore International Airport last night after the short flight here from Atlanta. High winds in the area -- which included a tornado warning -- caused all aircraft to have problems landing.
