Monday, November 29, 1999 Crucial penalty call fires up Flyers
One point is better than none, but that didn't ease the Flyers' disappointment with yesterday's result. Holding a 3-2 lead with just seconds remaining, the Flyers looked on course to win and vault a point ahead of Toronto atop the overall standings in the Eastern Conference. But, Shawn McEachern sent the game to overtime when he scored his seventh of the year with just 18 seconds on the clock. The tying goal was a sore point with the Flyers, and coach Roger Neilson, because of the call which gave the Senators the man-advantage. Luke Richardson was tabbed for hooking at 19:36, but the Flyers say that was nearly impossible considering Richardson was near the bench when the incident took place. If anything, the Flyers thought Jody Hull was the culprit. "Penalties called that aren't penalties just kill a team," said Neilson. Defenceman Eric Desjardins said the team continues to be a target for calls like that one, made by referee Dan Marouelli. "It's happened a couple of times," Desjardins said. "We get penalties that other teams probably wouldn't get." That wasn't the end of it, either. Mark Recchi was upset that Marouelli failed to call a penalty on Wade Redden in the first minute of the overtime period, when he was clipped with a high stick and knocked down. "The referee said he didn't see it," said Recchi. "If he didn't see it I don't know what he was looking at. I guess that stuff happens, part of the game I suppose." The loss was the fourth time this year the Flyers were unable to string three wins together. The Flyers had a four-game winning streak in mid-October, but since then have not found a way to get beyond three straight.
