Yzerman's 600th could have come in Senators uniform

By BRUCE GARRIOCH -- Ottawa Sun

THIS JUST IN: Red Wings star Steve Yzerman joined the NHL's elite 600-goal club Friday night and just think, he almost wore a Senators uniform. In the best deal former GM Randy Sexton could have made category, the Senators almost had the Nepean native in October 1995 for C Martin Straka, D Stan Neckar and two first-round draft picks. Sexton flew to Denver on the opening night of the season to close the deal, but Marian Ilitch -- the wife of Wings owner Mike -- wouldn't allow GM/coach Scotty Bowman to make the trade when push came to shove. Definitely the best move Bowman never made ... Pittsburgh star Jaromir Jagr told Ottawa G Patrick Lalime before their game Friday night in Steeltown that he would score two goals. Instead, Jagr had a natural hat trick and added an assist ... Colorado coach Bob Hartley has accused former 67's F Shean Donovan of not working and that's why he's only being used sparingly.

AROUND AND ABOUT: Senators C Alexei Yashin isn't going to win any popularity votes because of his holdout. He was voted fifth in ESPN.com's annual "Who's the Biggest Turkey in Sports" poll. Yashin received 3.7% of the votes, while San Diego QB Ryan Leaf was No. 1 at 51.7% ... Devils' tough guy Krzysztof Oliwa has become a student of astronomy when he's not fighting battles on the ice. "It's an escape from my stress," said Oliwa. "I like spending time looking at the planets and the stars." Oliwa is 6-foot-5 and weighs in at 235 lbs. ... Phoenix G Sean Burke is scheduled to make $2 million US this season, but he can pull down another $1 million in bonuses if he finishes among the top 10 goalies in the league. Burke recorded a shutout in a 7-0 win over Colorado Friday ... New York Islanders players are all over F Marius Czerkawski after CBC referred to him as "the Polish Wayne Gretzky." Said teammate Jamie Rivers: "It was either you or Oliwa." .... Acquired from the Avalanche for $1, Washington G Craig Billington recorded his second straight shutout Friday.

RUMOURS DU JOUR: New York Rangers coach John Muckler has been given a stay of execution by management, but if they don't start winning, he'll be gone. Want a surprising name as a top candidate to replace Muckler? Mike Keenan. Yes, he walked away after a contract dispute in 1994, but MSG head Dave Checketts wasn't running the organization then and he likes Keenan. If he's brought in, GM Neil Smith would have to be fired, however, Keenan is the perfect fit for the organization because he could handle the superstars on the Rangers' roster ... The Carolina Hurricanes are no longer close to a deal involving Keith Primeau going to Philadelphia, but talks are still hot with the Rangers and L.A. Kings. Kings' GM Dave Taylor is studying a package that would send D Aki Berg along with F Bryan Smolinski and a draft pick to Carolina for Primeau. Carolina owner Peter Karmanos has declared he wants to sign Primeau before he's traded because he doesn't want the all-star centre to be overpaid ... There was talk the Senators were going to trade RW Andreas Dackell, but management believes even if he's not scoring, he's still a good leader in the dressing room ... Top need for the Senators: A winger who can score to take some of the load off Shawn McEachern and Magnus Arvedson.

Have a nice Sunday. OTTAWA SENATORS DETROIT RED WINGS
