Monday, November 1, 1999 Dineen awaits fateSens winger faces more discipline for elbow
Dineen, 36, who has played 1,003 games, was forced to sit out the Senators' game against the Atlanta Thrashers at Philips Arena and faces a telephone chat with league VP Colin Campbell this morning. Campbell will decide if Dineen will face further punishment for his elbow to the head of Cam Stewart Saturday night which sent the Florida defenceman to the hospital with a concussion. But Dineen -- who will likely get a couple of more games before he is allowed to return to the lineup -- isn't the only one in trouble following the Senators' 5-0 rout of the Panthers. - Florida defenceman Bret Hedican could also be facing a suspension for his slash on Ottawa defenceman Sami Salo, who had surgery on a broken wrist and is out for 8-10 weeks. - Panthers tough guy Chris Wells is in trouble for jumping Dineen from behind in the third period. He was given an intent to injure penalty that carries an automatic review. "I don't know if I'm going to get anything but sometimes you have to send a message," said Wells. While the Senators recalled Kevin Miller from Grand Rapids (IHL) because they expected to lose Dineen, Ottawa coach Jacques Martin believes action should also be taken against the Panthers. "You have to do something about the stickwork," said Martin. "If players are using their sticks the way that (Hedican used his), they're just like carrying a weapon around out there. It was a pretty vicious slash. We're going to be without Sami for 8-10 weeks. There has to be some respect." That wasn't the only bad news for the Senators: Defenceman Igor Kravchuk suffered an MCL injury and could be gone for an extended period. He will be re-evaluated today, but it doesn't look good. THIN BLUE LINE The loss of Kravchuk and Salo meant seventh defenceman Patrick Traverse was inserted into the lineup along with Grand Rapids callup Karel Rachunek. The club will send defenceman Eric Goldmann back to the minors today. He was recalled because the club feared defenceman Janne Laukkanen -- troubled by a charley horse -- wouldn't be healthy enough to play. However, after warming up Laukkanen was given clearance to play. Still, the Sens are expected to begin a search for defencemen today -- one possibility is free agent Terry Carkner who was bought out by Florida.
