Dackell snaps slump, sparks Sens to win

By BRUCE GARRIOCH -- Ottawa Sun

Andreas Dackell, a two-handicapper on the golf course, was thankful for a gimme last night.

"Even I couldn't miss that one," he laughed.

The Senators winger was starting to wonder if he'd ever score again, but last night at the Corel Centre the timing couldn't have been better for Dackell to break a 16-game scoreless streak.

Dackell didn't net the winner in Ottawa's 2-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks -- that honour belonged to Magnus Arvedson -- but he lit the fuse that sparked the win over the Western Conference's worst club.

"Everything was perfect," said Dackell, who tied the game 1-1 with his first goal since Oct. 21 at 4:55 of the third period. "The net was wide open, the pass from Joe Juneau was unbelievable and all I had to do was put it in.

"You know, I've had so many chances in the last 10 or 15 games that haven't gone in for me, it just felt good to score."

     SLOW START

The victory probably shouldn't have been as difficult as it was for the Senators, but the Hawks refused to just hand over the two points ... and nothing has come easy for Ottawa of late, anyway.

While the 17,785 Corel Centre faithful were stifling yawns through the first two periods, the game opened up in the third. Dackell and Arvedson performed their heroics in a 27-second span just a few moments after Eric Daze had given Chicago the lead.

"I thought we really showed a lot of character in the third period," said defenceman Jason York, whose point shot Arvedson tipped home for the winner at 5:22.

"We really played well in the third and I thought we just got better as the game went on.

"We just kept going at them."

Until the offence got going, Lalime kept the Hawks at bay. Thrust into the starting role with regular starter Ron Tugnutt nursing a bum knee, Lalime was solid until beaten by Daze early in the third.

He also had a little help from his friends. Daze hit the crossbar in the second period after Dean McAmmond hadhammered one off the post on the glove side in the first frame.

     'PLAYING WELL'

"When it was 0-0 going into the third, I liked our chances to win," said Lalime, who made 25 saves. "We were playing well as a team and they weren't really getting many chances to score. We just had to keep going."

The way this season has gone for the Hawks, they can already start counting the days to the end of the year. And while they didn't collapse, the Hawks did lose their zip after Ottawa took the lead.

"I thought the guys competed and played hard," said Chicago coach Lorne Molleken.

"But this year whenever we make a mistake, it usually ends up in the net."
