On Tuesday, October 3, Dave, Bob, Clint and Scott Moffatt chatted with their fans through AllPop.com about their new album "Submodalities" and about what life is like when you're a Moffatt. Read the full transcript right here.
Moffatts: Hi we're talking with Bob first of all! We're about to start, there are a lot of questions to get through so there may be a delay between questions and answers
*elmoe*:
hey guys!!! I was just wondering what kind of reaction have
you been getting from the fans about your changed look and
sound? thanks so much, can't wait to see you all again and
take care!
Moffatts: Umm, well the reaction has been positive basically as a radio result, when we did the Christina Aguilera tour, that was a pretty could indication. What we thought was interesting was how the fans reacted to our new music on the tour. It was very positive. They were singing along to Bang Bang Boom. I guess a lot of the songs had leaked onto the internet.
*Drummer_Lover*:
Hey guys! I just wanted to say that your new album rocks! I
wanna know what your favourite part of the recording
process is?? Thanks! Luv ya Bob!!
-megan- from mississauga
Moffatts: Umm, well thank you for liking the record. I guess the best experience was I would say, just to get a creative input and ideas of tape, on the songs we had just written, that was the most important thing. And, of course, having Bob Rock, the producer of Aerosmith, Metallica, having him produce the record was exciting as well.
Kate and Valerie:
We've heard that "Just Another Phase" is going to be the
next single, off Submodalities. Is this true? Thanks
Moffatts: Yes, it is, we've picked it to be the second single and I think it's one of our favourite songs from the record. It was a difficult decision for us. All four of us are different and have different views on singles. But I think Just Another Phase was a good pick.
Cherry:
Hi this is Cherry from Malaysia! I admire your music and do
u know your music had changed my life? I just wanna say
thanks and I have a question. Do u ever think that your music
can changed a human's life?
Moffatts: I like to think so, I mean I think on all the songs on the record, every song has a message in it or something that one person can relate to. So, if our music affects people in a positive way, that's what we're in the business for. If our music was affecting people in a negative way, we wouldn't enjoy it.
Chris_in_Edmonton :):
Hi! Just wanted to ask you all a quick question - what is
the first thought
that crosses your mind when you go up on stage? Thanks!!
Luv ya!
Chris
Moffatts: First thought is, 'I hope I do a good show' when there's a lot of people out there,, we think a lot of people our age get an allowance and they spend it on our ticket so we look at that and say 'they're spending they're money to see us so why not provide them with something interesting and different and what they paid for' We concentrate on making the best show possible!
Sandy :
I saw you guys at Psykoblast for the 1st time. How
impressed I was with your talent and professionalism! Way
to go, Moffatts! Will you be doing a cross-Canada tour in
the near future?
Moffatts: Well, we're going to do a Canadian tour at the beginning of next year. We're working on Europe and Asia right now.
Major Tom:
In recent interviews, when asked what 'submodalities' meant
Bob suggested that we look it up in the dictionary. Many
fans have done so and have failed to find the word. Would
you mind telling us what dictionary he used? *hee hee*
Moffatts: Even we failed to find the word in dictionaries, we found the word and what it meant in a book I was reading called "Using your brain for a change" it's kind of a motivational book. My dad always gets us these books to read. My friend was reading it and came across "submodalities" and it had a ring for all of us cause it means having anything to do with a visual change of image. We thought it represented or musical growth and change in image. I wouldn't look it up in the dictionary though.
Joanne :
Hi Guys! Every time I see you my heart goes bang bang boom!
My question to you all is:
If you were the last sole survivor on an island who would
you want to be stranded with and why?
Thanks!
Moffatts: If I was on "Survivor" Island? I would have to say...my favourite actress Katie Holmes but personally we go to parties after shows and we meet these types of people at clubs....I don't know
Sheena:
Over the past year your music has changed quite a bit. Do
you think it will continue to change into a more heavier
style or are you guys gonna stick with this music genre for
a while?
Moffatts: I think this record is the beginning of The Moffatts trying to find their own sound or identity. I can only expect us to get a harder sound. We're trying to turn into more of a rock band.
Garth:
You guys have mentioned several times that one of your
favourite bands is Radiohead. Is it just a coincidence
that Submodalities will be released on the same day as Kid
A? *hee hee*
Moffatts: Well you know what? When we found out it would be released today, the record company was like 'I don't think anybody else will be released on the same day' then we found out about Radiohead and Scott was jumping up and down that our record was going to be released on the same day.
Scott has already worn out the "Radiohead" album.
Faten Zaman:
What are your musical influences right now?
Moffatts: Our musical influences, on this record, the four of us liked Radiohead, U2, Nirvana, the Beatles, personally myself I like the Foo Fighters.
Blue:
Why are you waiting until early 2001 to release
Submodalities in the US? Also, what's the deal with all the
different covers?
Moffatts: On this record, it will be released with one album cover, the deal with the last one was that we had to release a different version of "Chapter I" in the U.S. cause they wanted a different cover.
The reason we're waiting until 2001 for the U.S. was because we wanted to concentrate on Europe and Canada because the U.S. requires a lot of time.
UnPretty:
What Is your favourite song to perform on stage??
Moffatts: Talking with Scott:
Probably Spy and it's the last song on our new album. It's just one of those songs that I get to be a little bit crazier on stage. Not quite as in control as usual.
clint_and_bobs_babes:
We were wondering why in the "Thank you's" of submodalities
it said, 'To---------, you know who you are, thanks for
being there.' We were just wondering who that was directed
at. Thanks you guys rock, we love you and can't wait until
you guys get back to Winnipeg!!! Love ya!
Moffatts: Actually that was directed at just anyone who buys the album because you somehow were supporting the band or the album. You can fill your name in that blank. It was our way of being a little more personal with the album.
An...Your thai fan.:
Why you cut your long hair, Scott?
What your favourite song in this album?
When will you come to Thailand? [ I miss you so much ]
Who's in the bathroom with a girl in Bang Bang Boom VDO.?
Is that anyone in the moffatts?
Moffatts: I cut my hair because I wanted to. I just got really tired of waking up and having to do something to my hair. Now I wake up and I don't have to do anything to it. My favourite song on the album is 'Spy', very experimental.
We will be coming to Thailand in December.
nic and meg:
hey guys.. just wondering on mike bullard you had 3 verses
to just another phase now you only have 2 ... why?
thanks.. nic and meg from simcoe ontario
Moffatts: Actually we decided to take out one of the verses because the song was too long and actually I really liked that verse lyrically and I think it really improved the song by taking out one of those verses. It sounded more complete. But it took a long time to convince myself that that verse needed to come out.
Steph:
I was just wondering, what inspires you to write your
music? I mean, is it experiences you've had? Or feelings
you've had? Or is it just words that pour out that you
never knew you could have or express?
Thanks :)
Moffatts: I think on most of the songs, we write from personal experiences or emotions. We don't write songs just to write a song. When you do that you get songs that don't sound real.
That's one of the cool things about rock music - it sounds real.
That's why we write about personal experiences because when the fans buy the album they can kind of buy a piece of us and get a feel for what we're like.
Amelia & Susheela:
Mark David Chapman (John Lennon's killer), is scheduled for
a parole hearing. He says he should be released because
"John would have wanted it that way." Seeing as the
Beatles have been one of your bigger influences, how do you
feel about that?
Moffatts: I'm a huge John Lennon fan and I think that anybody who would want to kill John Lennon is completely retarded. I think he really hurt a lot of people, people kind of relied on John Lennon to provide music and statements that changed political things. I don't think he should be allowed out of prison. But I think John Lennon would have wanted to let him out because he's a very forgiving guy.
Sara (Moffatt) Kennedy:
Hey guys I love you with all my heart!!
Ok I have one question for you guys! How does it feel to be
walking down the street and being recognised?
Moffatts: I think that being recognised is a very cool experience to know that somebody really cares about your music that much. I think if people stop recognising us on the streets, that's when it gets a little scary. We take advantage of those moments, when people recognise us. They make or break a band. One of our main goals is to take time for our fans. They make sure our songs are on radio stations and MuchMusic, they are major players in success.
Christina Lawrence, St.Catharines ON:
What question are you SICK of hearing??? I know there has
got to be at least one! And what is the most stupidest
question you have been asked???
Moffatts: I think the one that bothers me the most because we've answered it so many times is :"Any stupid experience with fans" there are only good experiences with fans, it's hard to pick out an experience that's the funniest or most exciting.
The dumbest question is "how did we form the band or how did we get our name".
But then again, you can't blame the people who ask us those questions cause they probably didn't read the bio.
Mercy:
why do you love music so much?
Moffatts: Dave:
I love music because it allows me to express myself on a stage and it lets people all around the world hear what we love to do.
Margarita-Roxanne-Kristin from Winnipeg:
How did you guys know that the instruments you play are the
ones you'd really liked? For example Dave, how did you
decide on keyboards?
Moffatts: Well, I decided on keyboards because there was one in the house and I would just always go there and fiddle. My brothers were all actually playing the guitar in the beginning and the other two just moved onto different instruments.
We just knew what we wanted to do.
Christina and Brittany:
scott how do you feel about the way you've been marketed,
especially in America? Do you feel it truly represents you
guys as a group?
Moffatts: Well I think that in the beginning, like in Germany, it wasn't the image that we wanted, that wasn't the look that we wanted, we wanted more of a rock or band image and they gave us more of a skater or boy band image. But I mean we're getting around it now. A Lot of people now can see that wasn't The Moffatts (Chapter I). At first, before we recorded the album we were recording really heavy music then we went to Germany and recorded pop music. We didn't dislike recording the album but it just wasn't what we loved to play.
Galaxy:
Dave, I play keyboards too - have you got any tips on how
to improve?
Moffatts: Just practice, do scales, if you keep practising you'll get better.
Sissi:
Dave why do you look so fantastic ?
What do you do for your style ?
Moffatts: I just actually dyed my hair black. I'm just myself basically. I don't try to make myself look different. It's just me!
Thank you though.
Molly Jones:
Dave, did you and your brother write Tammy and Billy , as a
kind of 'molly and desmond' from obladi? I mean , where you
trying to write like the Beatles? what was it like to meet
George Harrison?
you are doing a great job !!! hi caz if you can see this ,
luv ya babe!!!
Moffatts: Actually, it wasn't even a thought when we wrote the song. Originally we were just gonna write it about Billy then we wrote about Tammy and then it just ended up being about Tammy and Billy.
We haven't met any of the Beatles. We've seen Paul McCartney at a showcase.
Mandie:
Hey guys!! In the video bang bang boom , Why is there a
girl lying on Clint on the other side of the bed? ( first I
didn't know it was Clint, but after I saw it a couple of
times I saw him) and When you went to Newfoundland for the
psyko blast tour, did you like it there , and will you go
there again?
Moffatts: Clint:
The first part: That's amazing that they actually caught that. It's a quick shot. What happened was in the video, Dave's holding the camera but you can't really tell until the end of the video. It was just sort of a different shot. There's no reason why we put it in there.
We did the Psykoblast tour because we wanted to play the new record for the Canadian fans first.
And YTV had been the first main supporters for us in Canada so we accepted their offer to go on tour.
Newfoundland was awesome. The crowd was amazing!
Harmonie:
How does it affect you when a fan tells you that your music
has helped them in some way?
Moffatts: I think that's one of the main reason why we're in the business, is to make people happy through our music.
Paula:
Do you feel that now you have changed your look people will
take your music more seriously?
Moffatts: I think so, for us...I don't think that was the main focus. We just wanted to go in and be us. The new record is The Moffatts. We knew that our songs would get played on the radio but we didn't go in there to please people. We wanted to please ourselves. Our last album wasn't totally The Moffatts (but it was good) and now this album is TOTALLY The Moffatts!
With the new album we've been trying to do a lot of showcases and I think when people see us now and listen to the record they do take us more seriously.
Dreamer:
In your Hawaiian diary you said that you'd type up a list
of all the instruments you used - are you still going to do
that?
Moffatts: Yeah we did, I think we wrote it out. It was a lot, we wrote down the years of all the different guitars.
I think we wrote down all that stuff. I'm sure somebody has it.
~Valerie, Michigan~ *Enter Moffatt Township*:
Hey guys! How did you feel when you won a Much Music Video
Award for "Misery" this year? Congrats, you deserve it!
:o)
Moffatts: It was surprising because we were up also for People's Choice which we won last year. We didn't think we'd win the industry award, but to win that and not win the other one was sort of a surprise and it was cool. It showed that the industry was taking us more seriously. We were excited, MuchMusic is very supportive.
Beth:
Are you ever going to regret not being able to have a
normal teenage life, or attend highschool?
Moffatts: No, I don't think we regret it. We still make time to visit our friends. If you see what we're doing and the life we live - it's a cool life! I think everybody who goes to school would much rather be flying all over the world!
On the other hand it's very cool to go home and hang out with our friends. Our parents and the record company are very cool with that.
We don't regret it, we love what we do!
Amanda , miramichi, N.B.:
Out of all the things you've done in your career, what do
you feel has been your biggest accomplishment?
Moffatts: Biggest accomplishment...hmmm...there's been a lot of really cool ones. Our first goal was to get a platinum award and we got that. I think it was in the Philippines and after that I think everybody's goal was to sell over a million albums, there's been so many different ones.
- Singing at the Dallas Cowboys game
- meeting Garth Brooks
- even little things like getting an A in math
Ele Roscoe *From England*:
Hi there Clint, hope you're having a good day! Question:
What tips would you give to someone young about your age
who takes music seriously, trying to start out in the
business? Thanks a lot from Elé
Moffatts: Well I think that if you.....musically you just have to do it. If you love what you do it that's the most important thing.
You have to stick with it. Our dad sacrificed his job just to support us and he said we could quit when we were thirteen and when we were thirteen we made a country records but it didn't really sell. And it wasn't making as much money for the family as our dad's old job and he could have gotten a new job and we could have quit but we stuck with it and started to get some success.
We never lost the passion for playing music.
You should never take anything for granted. People are working hard for you everyday.
Moffatts: Thanks everybody all around the world for sticking with us!
The new record is great and hopefully everyone will adapt to the new look and sound.
Hopefully we'll see everybody out at the shows.
Thanks for your support.
"Submodalities" - The Moffatts new album was released today, October 3.
