Genevieve Simard made a big charge to start her rookie season on the World Cup circuit and earned her Olympic criteria for the Salt Lake City Games. Simard placed 11th at the season opening Super G at Lake Louise. Then at the World Cup in France, Simard was the 64th and last skier down the course but nailed the eighth best time of the day in the Super G to get her Olympic ticket.
"It's hard to explain," said Simard. "It's definitely a dream come true. As a child, I always dreamt of making it and it's always been something I've wanted to do. Entering this season, I knew that it would be a big task for me to qualify this year. Looking at my results from last year, I knew it would be a big step but also knew it was possible. It's been a great motivator for me this season."
After recovering from a knee injury in 1999, Simard climbed the podium 11 times last season with strong performances in Europa Cup, Nor Am and International Ski Federation (FIS) races. Simard also placed second in GS at the Pontiac GMC Canadian championships.
