Jean-François Monette grabbed the sixth and final spot on the Olympic team at trials in November and will most likely be a substitute at the Games. Back in 1996, Monette won the world junior title and was a finalist at the Canadian Sport Awards for male junior athlete of year.

However he struggled at the senior level until last season when he won the first part of the national team trials going under world record times in both the 1,000 and 1,500. However that meet wasn't sanctioned by the International Skating Union and the times were not ratified.

Monette plans to resume his biology studies at the Universite du Quebec à Montreal after the Olympics.
