Eric Brisson of Ste-Foy has dedicated 23 years of his life to his sport and made numerous personal sacrifices including not spending Christmas with his family this year.

But it seemed well worth it when he qualified for his first Olympic Games in his final opportunity in the men's 500-metres at the final selection trials in long track speed skating in December.

There were two sets of trials in speed skating this year, both in Calgary. One was held before Christmas at the national championships and the second between Christmas and New Year. Brisson fell short in his bid to gain a berth at the first trials and was forced to remain in Calgary over the Christmas break.

Brisson is a medical student at the Universite Laval in Quebec City.

"I feel I have a shot at a top-six finish at the Olympics," he said. "The 500 event is a combined time from two races. So it's wide open, but I'll need two solid races."
