Four Canadian fencers qualify for Sydney

OTTAWA (CP) -- Four Canadians -- Edmonton's Jujie Luan, Sherraine Schalm of Brooks, Alta., Vancouver's Laurie Shong and Montreal's Julie Mahoney -- have qualified for the fencing competition at the Sydney Olympics.

Fencing's international governing body, Federation Internationale D'escrime, on Wednesday released its official list of athletes selected for the Games.

Luan, 41, advances to her second Olympics, after winning a gold medal for China at the 1984 Los Angeles Games. She won the 1999 Canadian championships. Luan is ranked 45th in the world in women's foil.

The 29-year-old Shong is ranked 31st in the world in men's epee. He finished third at a World Cup event this year after earning a bronze at the 1999 Pan-Am Games.

Mahoney, 21, is ranked 36th in the world in women's foil. After earning a bronze medal at the 1999 Pan-Am Games, she has competed at five World Cup events this year, with a top finish of 15th place.

Schalm, 24, ranked 17th in the world in women's epee, finished sixth in the 1999 world championships.
