Robin D'Abreo has field hockey in his blood. Born in India, where it is a
very popular sport, D'Abreo entered the sport at the age of 8 because both
his father and older brother played. D'Abreo likes the camaraderie on the
national team and points out that they get along well and hang out both on
and off the field. He feels the near-riot incident at the 1998
Commonwealth Games versus Malaysia definitely brought the team together.
Though it was a bit of an ordeal at the time, in the long run it was
positive. "It was kind of good for the sport in a way," he said. "A lot
of people that ordinarily wouldn't have been talking about field hockey,
were talking and reading about it." On top of wanting to make a stand with
a medal showing in Sydney, D'Abreo hopes Canada can crack the top six teams
in the world and have a chance to play for the Champions Trophy, the most
prestigious event in the sport after the Games.
